Puerto Rico residency or documented ties to the island, plus functional Spanish. The mission is training physicians able to serve the underserved and enhance the health status of Puerto Ricans, and the curriculum itself is bilingual Spanish/English, so Spanish is a working requirement rather than a bonus. Non-resident applicants are considered case by case but must demonstrate strong ties, which the Committee on Admission tests concretely against four categories — birthplace, high school attended, college attended and parents' legal residence — with two of four establishing ties.
Watch out: An applicant with no Spanish cannot follow a bilingual curriculum, and one with fewer than two of the four ties categories is outside the pool the school is built to serve. Hard floors apply: a bachelor's degree with at least a 3.00 overall and 3.00 science index, and an MCAT no later than August of the prior year.
