Service to underserved and Hispanic border communities, with Spanish fluency a substantive asset rather than a nice-to-have. UTRGV is the only US medical school physically on the US-Mexico border and was founded to transform healthcare in the Rio Grande Valley, one of the most medically underserved regions in the country, with work centred on diabetes, obesity, maternal health and infectious disease in a largely Hispanic, low-income population. Holistic review strongly values extracurriculars showing community service, leadership and healthcare exposure, especially with underserved populations, and the school runs its own delivery arms such as the UniMovil mobile clinic and AHEC sites.
