The CRISP Rural Iowa Scholars Program selects on four stated grounds: prior exposure to rural life, demonstrated commitment to practise medicine in Iowa, demonstrated understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a rural physician, and personal characteristics important in rural practice, which is a far more specific test than a general interest in rural medicine.
Watch out: Applying to CRISP without having lived rural life, or without being able to describe what a rural physician actually does day to day, fails two of the four named criteria. Physician shadowing is treated as expected clinical exposure rather than optional.
