Tufts runs two distinct admissions paths from one application. Maine Track applicants are reviewed for both the Maine Track and the traditional MD track, selected jointly by committees representing Tufts and MaineHealth, and interviewed by faculty at Maine Medical Center in Portland, so a rural or community-medicine narrative is evaluated by the people who will train that student. The school looks for leadership, professionalism and commitment to social responsibility, particularly around health disparities and equity for underserved populations, and values collaboration, interprofessional teamwork and lifelong learning alongside clinical experience, community service and interest in primary care and global health.
Watch out: Applying to the Maine Track without rural or community-based experience means facing a second, separate committee that specialises in exactly that. A conventional urban-research file is fine for the traditional track but adds nothing on the Maine side.
