A stated commitment to practising in underserved areas, paired with a real understanding of osteopathic medicine. TouroCOM opened in Harlem in 2007 as the first new medical school in New York State in nearly 30 years, with an explicit emphasis on training minority physicians and on identifying and recruiting students willing to commit to underserved practice. The school runs community pipeline work such as Med-Achieve, mentoring high school students from underrepresented groups, and has repeatedly received the HEED diversity award. Applicants are expected to present a passion for serving underserved areas and to embody osteopathic philosophy.
