SLU is unusually explicit about how the two halves of a file interact: excellence in character, motivation and ideals cannot substitute for intellectual ability shown through scholastic achievement, and academic achievement alone is not a sufficient foundation for the profession. The Jesuit principle of cura personalis, care for the whole person including physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs, runs through the school, and interviewers expect a personal values narrative that connects service to that idea rather than generic altruism. The committee evaluates character, professional aspirations and academic achievement together, without regard to financial status, age, race, national origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability or veteran status.

Watch out: Neither half of the file can carry the other by the school's own statement, so a spike in either direction stalls. An applicant who cannot articulate values in whole-person terms under-performs in an interview where the mission is a real filter.
