Carle Illinois is the first medical school in the world designed at the intersection of engineering and medicine, and it screens accordingly: applicants must demonstrate competency in at least 9 of 11 defined areas simply to receive a secondary application, which is a far more explicit gate than most schools publish. It looks for physician innovators committed to improving care through technology and engineering, and encourages substantial preparation in quantitative areas alongside pre-med sciences, with coding experience or direct patient care roles such as EMT or medical assistant named as useful. No specific undergraduate major is required, but demonstrated quantitative and technical capability effectively is.

Watch out: A conventional biology-only pre-med profile with no quantitative, computational or design work is a poor match for a curriculum built on engineering problem solving, and the 9-of-11 competency screen means that gap can end the application before holistic review. A bachelor's degree from an accredited US or Canadian institution is required before matriculation.
