Demonstrated understanding of border health as a specific epidemiological and cultural reality, not a generic interest in underserved care, plus post-graduation plans pointed at communities like those around Las Cruces. BCOM was founded to address physician shortage on the US-Mexico border and specifically in Hispanic and Native American communities, and ranks second nationally for the proportion of underrepresented-minority students in osteopathic medicine. Spanish-language ability and border or Southwest ties are real assets.
