Brown states that all applicants are selected on academic achievement, faculty evaluations, and evidence of maturity, motivation, leadership, integrity and compassion. The school's identity runs through the Open Curriculum and the Program in Liberal Medical Education, an eight-year baccalaureate-MD continuum and the only one in the Ivy League, whose vision is graduating doctors exposed to a wide, sensitizing view of the human condition and committed to holistic medicine. Because PLME fills a large share of each medical class, the pool available to standard MD applicants is smaller than the class size suggests, and a liberal arts breadth reads as native to the school rather than unusual.
