AWSOM integrates the arts, humanities and whole health principles into conventional medical education through its ARCHES curriculum, whose six elements are Art of Healing, Research, Clinical Care, Health Systems Science, Embracing Whole Health and Science of Medicine. The school says its most successful applicants demonstrate empathy, self-care, humanism, an entrepreneurial spirit, collaboration and community focus, and self-care as a named selection criterion is close to unique. The secondary application asks directly about mission alignment, unique contribution to community, advocacy experience, relationships with people different from oneself, and a personal approach to whole health, so those essays are the real evaluation. The mission is transforming health in medically underserved and rural Arkansas and surrounding states.
